The Falling-Asleep Of The Mother Of Life

Through Eve (Life) came death;
through Mary came Life.

Troparion - Tone 1

In giving birth you preserved your virginity, in falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were translated to life, O Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death.

Kontakion - Tone 2

Neither the tomb, nor death could hold the Theotokos, who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For being the Mother of Life, she was translated to life by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb.

This time of year I always remember my last two years in college, when I came back to the Church. I went to school at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Summers were hot down there.

I would frequently go to the chapel on campus, enter the alcove dedicated to Virgin of Guadalupe, and sweat profusely while praying for the soul of my father, who was not a Catholic and had died when I was twelve. I always light a candle before the Virgin on his birthday, August 10th. So I always think of these two people at the same time.

I am truly very deeply sorry to hear about the premature death of Your father, and the tragedy of You loosing him while at such a young age. May God rest his soul, may he rest in peace and his ashes be light.
